"Brown Eyed Girl" by Van Morrison

Riff Rundown

Difficulty: Easy - Intermediate

Composer - Van Morrison

Where to find this song - Blowin' Your Mind track #1

Release Date - January 1967

George Ivan Morrison was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, on August 31, 1945; his mother was a singer, while his father compulsively collected classic American jazz and blues recordings. At 15, he quit school to join the local R&B band, The Monarchs, touring military bases throughout Europe before returning home to form his own group, Them. He soon realized that by himself was how he wanted to be, and begin churning out hit after hit world-wide.

Intro

This riff is fun to play. Begin the first measure and the third measure ( they are identical ) by placing your 1st finger on the seventh fret on the "high E" string, and place your 2nd finger on the eighth fret on the "B" string. Play that once, and then move your 1st finger to the eighth fret on the "high E" string and your 2nd finger on the tenth fret on the "B" string. Move both of those fingers down to the tenth and twelfth frets on the same strings, and then play the beginning part of the measure just as you did before, but this time, just reverse the chord placements.

The second measure is pretty much the same idea. Place your fingers just as you did in the first measure, but just on the different frets that are shown on the tablature.

The fourth measure is the only real different measure in the intro. Play this measure by placing your 1st finger on the fifth fret on the "high E" string. Place your 3rd finger on the seventh fret on the "G" string. Play those together, using your fingers to pick, and then you can either use your 3rd finger again for the "B" string, or you can use your 2nd finger. Play the seventh fret on that string, and then move to the eighth fret with either finger. Play the fifth fret with your 1st finger again, and the intro riff is finished!

Bass

Begin this measure by placing your 2nd finger on the third fret on the "E" string. Play that twice, and then use your 1st finger to play the second fret on the "A" string. Play the second measure by placing your 2nd finger on the third fret on the "A" string. Play that once, and then use your 1st finger to play the second fret on the "D" string. Play that twice, and then move your finger to the fourth fret on the same string. Play the third measure by placing your 4th finger on the fifth fret on the "D" string. Then, use your 1st finger for the second fret on the "A" string, and then move to the fourth fret with the same finger on the same string. To play the last measure of the bass riff, place your 2nd finger on the fifth fret on the "A" string, and then play the "E" string open twice. After you have done that, use your 1st finger on the first fret on the "E" string. To end the bass riff, either use your 1st or 2nd finger to play the second fret on the "E" string.
